7 Easy-to-Keep Resolutions for Family Caregivers

By , 9:00 am on

The new year is almost here, which means it’s a great time for caregivers to make new resolutions to take better care of themselves so that they can do a better job of taking care of their senior loved ones. New Hampshire elderly care providers recommend the following seven to get you started.

1. Talk to Someone

Resolve this year to talk to someone about how your day is going. In addition to maintaining your social skills, talking to friends and family can help you blow off some steam. Sometimes simply stating what you are feeling brings problems into a whole new light.

2. Accept Help

If you are like most family caregivers, people often ask you if they can help. You brush them off thinking that they really do not mean it. This year, resolve to accept some help from friends, family and respite home care agencies in New Hampshire

3. Share Your Stresses with Your Family

When you took on the role of family caregiver, many other members of your family probably let out a big sigh of relief. Involve them in decision making and let go of some of the load that you have probably been trying to carry by yourself.

4. Read a Great Book

While reading is a wonderful way to learn more about medical conditions and how to do a better job as a family caregiver, this year resolve to read at least one book that you really want to read. If you need some suggestions, then head to your local library.

5. Make a Fun Craft with Your Senior

There are many crafts that you can make that use recycled materials. This year, resolve to make one with your senior. The memories that you build together will be priceless.

6. Keep a Journal

Even if you simply use a three-ring binder or a spiral notebook, journaling is a great way to release your frustrations. Additionally, journaling can help you see problems in a brand new way. While many people write in a journal each day, do not feel pressure to do so as this is your space.

7. Participate in a Support Group

One in 10 people are family caregivers. A great way to learn from each other is to participate in a support group. The best ones often share amazing solutions to common problems that you might not have thought of by yourself.
